Inside PMR Centre

The Facilities we have

Two things you might only find here and no where else in Shillong are Hydrotherapy and Virtual Reality. People with joint sprains, strains, arthritis and even prolapsed discs will greatly benefit from aquatic therapy or doing exercises in the hydrotherapy pool. It is heated to a temperature over 30degrees celcius.

Virtual Reality is a new and captivating method of therapy which we use for those with difficult movement disorders.

Equipments which will help manage your pain such as TENS, Ultrasound Therapy, Short Wave Diathermy are available. Stiff joints will benefit from Paraffin wax. Body weight supported treadmill training (BWSTT) is also available for spinal mobility training.

Steroid Injections will be performed according to the doctors' discretion. PRP (plately rich plasma) injections will also be available.

We are also one of the very few Centres in India and the only Centre in the North East who produce our own customized 3D Printed Splints.

We believe in the power of Music as a source of healing and will be using Music as a therapy for certain patient groups.

What we offer

Alongside a full physiotherapy and rehabilitation department, PMR Centre offers facilities not found elsewhere in Shillong — including our hydrotherapy pool and virtual-reality therapy.

  • Procedures

Interventions such as injections need to be done only if you do not respond to conservative methods of treatment including medications and exercises. Such injections will be done using ultrasound guidance which gives better precision and results.

As current research shows good success with injections using PRP ( Platelet Rich Plasma ), we will be moving towards that direction. We can give you more details about PRP at the Centre.

Currently, as a Centrifuge machine to acquire the plasma is not yet available, our injections will be mostly done using steroids, which is the current norm of treatment.

  • Hydrotherapy Pool

Water gives buoyancy to bones and ligaments. It also gives resistance to strengthen weak muscles. In many ways, it heals a painful joint and keeps it supple. These properties of water are strong aspects of treatment for many who have injured joints secondary to a sports injury or those with Arthritic and Degenerative joints.

For specific patients, exercises will be taught by the Physiotherapist who will be attending to them while they're in the Hydrotherapy Pool. This, and temperature control are what make it different from one swimming in a swimming pool.

At no point during the session will they be left on their own. Effort and care will be taken to maintain the patients' privacy and trust at all times.

  • Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality is a new and upcoming form of therapy which engages a patient to perform their exercises in a 3D environment. Video games are attractive to a child OR an adult. It takes away the monotony of an exercise which needs to be done daily.

Post stroke patients, Children with Autism and motor dysfunction, Patients with Neurological problems causing pain are some of those who will benefit from an immersive therapy like VR.

  • 3D Printed Splints

Patients with deformities benefit with correctional splints. The lack of availability of such Orthoses led us to produce our own splints by 3D Printing them, being one of the first in the country, and the first in the North East to do so.

Our splints are customized to the patients' shape and size. The comfort of the patient is also given priority. Apart from splints, we have also been successful in producing prostheses or artificial limbs which aid those who have lost a limb.

As it is still a very new field, our research is still ongoing. We hope to improve our quality and quantity of production so we may provide timely help to those who are in need.

  • Music Therapy

Up until a few years ago, music was only used as an aesthetic form of treatment. This decade has exploded with scientific evidence showing the tracts on which music travels to areas of the brain, triggering neurons which may have been injured there. In other ways, qualities of music such as rhythm can cause motor cueing which helps with gait training.

Post stroke and brain injury patients with motor and speech dysfunctions, persons with Parkinsons Disease, Children with Autism Spectrum related disorders are some of the groups of patients who have seen to benefit from Music Therapy.

We will be partnering with Harmini Preparatory Music Academy for setting up a Music School catering to the needs of the differently abled. Here, music will not only be used as therapy but we will also encourage those with interest and talent in music to follow proper music and performance training.

  • Modalities

Hands on exercises are taught to patients by Physiotherapists. However, in certain cases, pain may persist for various reasons. In such cases, physiotherapists take the help of modalities such as Ultrasound Therapy, Short Wave Diathermy, Laser therapy, Hot and cold moist therapy, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and more.

These modalities are available at the Centre and will be used according to the need of the patient.
